You can probably think of at least one person in your life who handles change impressively well. They can roll with the punches and go with the flow, even under pressure. If you want to embody more of that energy yourself, this blog post is for you! Adaptability can help you thrive in the face of transitions, both big and small. There are both mindset shifts and tangible actions you can take to become more adaptable—let’s dive in!
1- Trust in yourself and your ability to take on new challenges.
The advice in so many of my posts boils down to trust—especially self-trust. No matter what the topic, trusting yourself just makes life easier. As for the topic of adaptability, self-trust allows you to say, “I don’t have to fear change, because I know I can handle it.” If you’ve struggled with adapting to change, it’s worth considering if it’s come from a lack of self-trust. Now’s the time to remind yourself of all the ways throughout your life when you’ve demonstrated that you can rise to the occasion.
My posts Self-Trust: How to Strengthen It and Monthly Mindset Shift: How to Worry Less About the Future offer some powerful advice and food for thought on this topic. You’re a lot more likely to ease right into a transition when you believe you can!
2- Trust that every transition you go through is part of the path you’re meant to be on.
Yes, another tip involving trust! This one is focused on trusting the process. Maybe you find yourself hopelessly wondering why one chapter had to end, making it harder to adapt to the new one. However, when you trust that each chapter is a necessary part of your story, you’re more likely to lean in. It may be an adjustment, but maybe part of its purpose is to strengthen your adaptability…how poetic!
3- Take what you learned from one season of life and apply it to the next.
This is another piece of advice I love giving, as it’s one that applies to countless topics! Life is constantly giving us new skills, insight, and knowledge to learn. These things aren’t meant to be kept on a shelf but to be applied in any number of future scenarios. So often, the things we learn are transferable in ways we never could’ve imagined when we learned them. What better time than amid a transition to bust them out?
4- Practice pushing yourself out of your own comfort zone.
That’s how adaptability is born—by putting yourself in situations that require it. (The same can be said for pretty much any quality you’re looking to embody!) If change hasn’t felt natural for you, now’s the time to get better acquainted with it. Change up your style, your routine, your hobbies, or anything else you desire. Show yourself that you can adapt to new things and actually enjoy doing so!
The bottom line…
We certainly can’t predict or plan for every curveball that life will throw us. However, we can believe in ourselves and trust the process enough to know that we’ll be okay when those curveballs come. That’s adaptability at its finest!
