The “Become Unrecognizable” Trend: Do’s And Don’t’s

If you’ve been on social media the last few months, you may’ve come across the “become unrecognizable” trend. It’s generally used in the context of altering your appearance (ex: a new makeup look). However, it can also refer to internal changes that make you a new version of yourself. In this post, we’re delving into the best ways that you can become unrecognizable, as well as the ways you’re better off *staying recognizable*. Let’s dive in!

DO: Experiment with different clothing styles, hairstyles, makeup looks, etc.

There’s nothing wrong with tweaking your outward appearance here and there, just for the fun of it! If you’ve been craving a change in your looks, or a certain trend inspires you, go for it! As much as looks certainly aren’t everything, there’s something special about loving the way you look. It helps you radiate confidence and makes your days a little brighter. A keyword in this tip is “experiment”. That means, if you try something and don’t like it, you can go right back to your normal look, or try a different new one. Regardless, make it fun for yourself to dabble in different styles to see what you like best for yourself!

DON’T: Compromise your personal style or preferences.

At the end of the day, the things about your look that make you beautifully and uniquely “you” deserve to stay. Just because something is a trend doesn’t mean you have to follow it. Everyone is working with a different blank canvas, each of which has different paints that make it most beautiful and true-to-self! Identifying what these “paints” are for you will change the game!

DO: Try new habits or routines that you think would better yourself or your life.

Sometimes we get stuck in a rut and need to switch things up. The way you spend your mornings or evenings, or the little things you do throughout the day, could potentially use a refresh. For instance, maybe you’ve come to the realization that you “doom scroll” on social media too much. It’s not adding any value to your life, and in fact, it’s depleting value by negatively affecting your mood and taking away from better uses of your time. The necessary change could be as simple as using social media more constructively, or it could be doing a completely different activity. Regardless, experimentation is important here, yet again!

DON’T: Overwhelm yourself by trying to make too many changes at once.

When we’re on a kick of becoming unrecognizable, we might be tempted to try making every change under the sun. However, sustainable change tends to come from focusing in on fewer areas at a time. Of course, if certain changes are small and easy to integrate into your current routine, you may be able to take on more. The key is to be honest with yourself about how much is too much for you and prioritize what’s most important to you right now.

DO: Take on the identity that aligns with the habits you want to form.

In other words, if you want to be more organized, declare yourself an organized person! If you want to write more, consider yourself a writer! Wear the labels that reflect who you want to be. Even if it doesn’t feel 100% natural in the beginning, don’t worry. The more fuel you give to a narrative about yourself, the truer it becomes over time (so, choose wisely!). It should slowly trick your brain into acting in accordance with that narrative. The habits you want to form will feel more nonnegotiable, because of course an x, y, and z-type of person would do a, b, and c! This will show you that your desired traits are already within you—it’s just a matter of getting in touch with them.

DON’T: Confine yourself to old ideas of who you are.

To return to the example of wanting to be more organized, even if you’ve been notoriously disorganized throughout your entire life, you don’t need to be endlessly tethered to this version of yourself. Of course it can take time to change your ways when it comes to just about anything. However, a great first step is believing that it’s possible. You don’t need to remain loyal to a trait that hasn’t served you well. Chances are, it’s something that you can work on and improve upon, as long as you’re patient and intentional. As per the last point, taking on the identity of an organized person can help you act accordingly!

DO: Work toward becoming your dream version of yourself.

If you’re going to become unrecognizable, that unrecognizable “you” may as well be your dream “you”, right? Think about what traits you want to embody more wholeheartedly, what goals you want to achieve, what life changes you want to make, etc. If you’ve been putting these things on the back burner, here’s your sign to bring them forward and make them the priorities they deserve to be! As per the last point, it doesn’t all have to happen at once. The small changes will add up, though, and slowly but surely make you unrecognizable!

DON’T: Be hard on your current, recognizable self.

Just because you’re looking to evolve does NOT mean there’s anything wrong with who you are right now. You go through seasons in life, each of which you’re a slightly (or very) different version of yourself for. You might prefer some versions to others, but the reality is, they’re all special in their own way! Your quest to become unrecognizable should come from a place of already loving yourself as you are; just wanting to elevate yourself and remove what no longer serves you. (Read point #4 on my post How to Create Balance in Your Mindset with These 5 Paradoxes for more on this distinction!)

The bottom line…

Becoming unrecognizable isn’t just about physically presenting yourself in a way that makes you *literally* unrecognizable. It’s about making the changes in all areas of your life that you’ve been wanting to make. These changes will level up your confidence, as well as both your inward and outward beauty, naturally making you unrecognizable!
