Sometimes we have so many thoughts, feelings, and ideas ruminating within us that we could explode! This doesn’t have to be a bad thing—sometimes all of this pent-up energy is positive. Regardless, though, it’s natural to want to channel it into a creative outlet. If you’ve been craving self-expression, for any purpose, here are some oulets you might want to try!
1- Writing (of any kind)
As a blogger (and avid journal-keeper), you should’ve seen this one coming! There are so many ways that writing can allow you to express yourself. Maybe your life experiences feel so unique that you can’t help but want to turn them into a book or movie script. Maybe you feel like you have the solution to a widespread problem, and you just have to write about it. Or maybe you simply have to vent about all the complexities of your emotions and thought processes right now. In any of these examples, whether it goes public or stays private, writing it out can feel incredibly empowering and satisfying!
2- Fine/visual arts
Sometimes what’s happening inside your mind or heart can be perfectly portrayed visually. Maybe your messy thoughts can translate into a canvas with beautifully messy scribbles all over it. Maybe a piece of clay could tell your life story more concisely than you ever could through words. So many people consider themselves “not an artist”, but the thing is, art is largely subjective. In the art world, one person’s trash could easily be another person’s treasure. Even if you’re not technically trained, or you just don’t love the way your art comes out, it’s still worth a try if it appeals to you at all!
3- Performing arts
Belting out a song that just understands you could be a great catharsis for you. The same goes for acting out a scene or doing a dance routine. Not only can these forms of self-expression be great emotional outlets, but they get your physical body involved as well. It’s all connected anyway, so you may as well engage all the different parts of yourself!
4- Content creation
Like writing, I’m sure this tip doesn’t come as a shock to you, given that it’s coming from a content creator! A misconception about content creation, though, is that you only reap the benefits if you have a large following. The truth is, your follower count could be in the double digits, but that one comment from someone who appreciated your content made it all worth it. The ability to express yourself with a never-ending bank of potential viewers opens up a whole new world. Not only are you letting your thoughts and feelings out, but you’re giving them the opportunity to reach an audience who resonates with them. If your content is consistent, authentic, and well-thought-out, it’s only a matter of time before someone (if not many people) respond positively! Heck, even in the unlikely event that you never get a single like or comment, it could still be a therapeutic form of self-expression, just for you!
5- Personal style / appearance
Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there’s no one right way to present yourself. However, if there is a “right” way, it’s the way that makes you feel your most confident. Over time, it should become clearer to you what your true style is, how you best like your hair, etc. These things can absolutely evolve over time, but what matters most is that you honor what currently speaks to you. Have fun with trying different looks until you find what suits you best!
The bottom line…
Self-expression comes in endless forms. These are just a few of them, but they cover a lot of ground. Keep experimenting until you find the forms that feel most authentic and freeing to you!
